Dr. Jos Akkermans is Associate Professor of Sustainable Careers and Organizational Behavior at the department of Management and Organization at VU Amsterdam. His research primarily focuses on sustainable careers and changing employer-employee relationships. He studies the development and management of sustainable careers by examining topics such as employability, career crafting, and career shocks, and is also especially interested in studying study success and school-to-work transitions as the foundation of sustainable careers. He also researches changing employer-employee relationships, focusing on topics such as psychological contracts, job crafting and job design, employee well-being, and innovative methods of recruiting talent. Dr. Akkermans has published in high-profile journals such as Journal of Vocational Behavior, European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, Applied Psychology: An International Review, and Human Resource Management. In addition, he is associate editor of Career Development International.
In terms of teaching and management, Dr. Akkermans is the program director of the Business Administration Master’s program at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. In addition, he is program coordinator of the HRM Master’s program, teaches several courses such as Recruitment & Selection (MSc), and HRM & Organizational Behavior (BSc), and he supervise PhD students, Master’s students, and Bachelor students. Dr. Akkermans has been trained as a senior university teacher (SKO), he won the Faculty Best Teacher award in 2016, and he was voted in the top 3 Best Teaching Talents of VU Amsterdam in 2016.
Finally, he is actively involved in cooperating with businesses and professionals. Among other things, he is a board member of the Dutch Foundation of Management Development (NFMD), a consultant at Royal FrieslandCampina, a core member of the applied science board of Knowvium, and he is regularly invited for keynote lectures and workshops during conferences and in companies.
